 What is Choreography?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, dance and choreography are similarly defined as "a sequence of movements and steps that match the speed and rhythm of a music piece;" but truly, is dance only that? Dance has certainly been an important part of ceremonies since the birth of the earliest members of the human race. Archaeology depicts traces of dance figures from prehistoric Greek and Egyptian tomb paintings since c. 3300 BC. The Greek philosopher Aristotle said that dancers could express manners, passions, and actions. As an expressive art form, dance is the essence of human soul since the beginning of time. The American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham succinctly said, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body."

The art of creating and arranging sequences of movements for dancers is called Choreography. Through choreography we release our body and mind to express concealed or perceptible emotions. Many cultures perform dances for social interactions and spiritual settings. Choreography is the critical part of any performance envisioning: space, shape, symbol, image, setting, time, energy, music, feeling, technique, style, form, personality, analysis, interpretation, understanding; and all this multiplex composition is created within an emotionally accurate frame. Every piece of choreography portrays the excursion language of a character. The prolific choreographer George Balanchine said, “Dancers are instruments, like a piano the choreographer plays.”

 Choosing a Choreographer

The very essence of a dance production often comes from a choreographer’s soul. It is he/she who motivates and directs dancers, studies the effect of every movement upon the audience, and dramatically amalgamates motion with music. However, talented choreographers must be educated, experienced dancers themselves, and able to manage multiple tasks all at once. An accomplished choreographer should:

• • Supervise and coordinate the work of designers, musicians and any other artists who collaborate with them
  • Teach and rehearse each movement of each member of the dance company
  • Meet and effectively work with producers, costume designers, and musical, artistic and theater directors
  • Document the steps of the choreography for future performance using a notation system, such as Labanotation or Benesh
  • Be knowledgeable in music, literature, history, visual arts, theater, and psychology
  • Be skillfully communicative in order to motivate, develop, direct and analyze his ideas to the dancers and the whole production team
  • Manage all anticipated tasks with excellent results while working under pressure and meeting various deadlines
